Bible Truths for Times of Political Agitation
In times of political agitation, we have settling and guiding wisdom from our Lord Jesus Christ.
Be still, and know that I am God (Ps. 46:10). In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength; but you were unwilling (Isa. 30:15). National peace and prosperity are from knowing God and living for his glory, being still before Him, and turning to him in faith and repentance. Our strength lies in walking with him, quiet communion, and joyful obedience.
Pray for the peace of your city, county commission, and sheriff’s department. In their peace, we have peace – not to sleep while the world burns, but to work, pray, and disciple (Jer. 29:7; 1 Tim. 2:2). At the same time, be ready and prepared for just about anything. This is part of our spiritual watching.
Do not think like an atheist. We live under the reign of Jesus Christ; he is now Lord and Christ (Ps. 2:9; Acts 2:30-36; Eph. 1:21). Even Socialism accomplishes his purposes to judge his enemies and teach the nations righteousness. Do not be afraid of men, politicians, and conspiracies. Fear the Lord.
Do not trust politicians and presidents (Ps. 146:3). When they threaten the righteous, remember Christ’s word to Herod: “Go, tell that fox” (Luke 13:32). The Lord Jesus knows the hearts, thoughts, and plans of his enemies. We must honor civil rulers as ministers of God. At the same time, like wily foxes they scheme against God and his people (Ps. 2:1-2). The American catastrophe is theological. We have forsaken the one true God for the worship of the false gods of moral, religious, and political polytheism.
There is one path to national blessing. “Righteousness exalts a nation” (Prov. 14:34). The personal blindness and rebellion of Western leaders is most evident in that no one speaks the King’s platform: “Kiss the Son, lest he be angry with you.” Because few are sounding this alarm, expect our national calamities to continue, even while the Lord is caring for his people and calling us to faith and courage.
God’s commandments apply to the ballot box. Do not vote for murderers, thieves, mutilators, or Muslims. Christians should not vote politicians who espouse baby-killing until birth, adolescent mutilation for transvestism, Marxist-Socialism, and open borders for societal revolutionaries. Do not vote for Muslims. When they are in the minority, they feign friendship and tolerance. In the majority, they institute a regime of terror. Look at the Middle East and many parts of Africa to see the fruits of Islam: blood, tyranny, and poverty. The West is being invaded again by the Muslim menace. Nothing will save us but turning back to the Lord, discipleship, and Gospel armor.
Believe the Father’s blueprint for history. Always commit yourself to Jesus Christ the Vine, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The direction and destiny of history is for Jesus Christ to be known, exalted, and served (Phil. 2:9-11). He will have the preeminence in all things (Col. 1:18) – heaven and earth, life and death, time and history, men and nations, demons and angels. He must reign “until all his enemies are made his footstool” (Heb. 10:13). This is the future, not what unbelievers prognosticate and plan.
“I will build my church.” His plain declaration in Matthew 16:18 is clarifying. He is not building the Democrats or Republicans, the Americans or the Chinese. His eye is upon those who fear Him. His eye, his affection, his power, his blessing is upon his church. He is building her: the redeemed from every tongue, tribe, and nation. He is building her by his Word and Spirit. He is building her by the slow and lowly means of discipleship – soul to soul, life to life sharing the gospel, trusting in Him, and turning to Him. He is building her by being a faithful Shepherd to guard, love, and provide. He builds his church by faithful pastors, elders, and deacons, faithful disciples, a godly mother’s home guarding, a faithful father’s shepherding and teaching his family God’s love and mercy. Live for him, and he is using you! All is safe in union with Jesus Christ.
